William D. Lewis: Twenty Blue Paintings and Two Heads of Silver - Exhibition Catalogue
A unique exhibition catalogue with essay by Jacqueline Crist, photos by Wytske van Keulen, and a series of responses to Lewis’ work by 23 creative people, including artists and writers, professors and patrons, dancers and poets. Printed by Evermore Prints in Boise, this somewhat unusual catalogue consists of 26 index-sized cards bound with a rubber band in a stamped, 5x7-inch, manilla envelope. Catalogues are also available in The Common Well gallery. Open M-F, 9-5 or by appointment.
BACK STORY: This “catalogue” was a collaborative project inspired by the catalogues for two exhibitions, 955,000 and 557,087, organized by writer/activist/curator Lucy Lippard at The Seattle Art Museum (1969) and the Vancouver Art Gallery (1970) that included artists John Baldessari, Hanne Darboven, Walter de Maria, Dan Graham, Eva Hesse, Sol LeWitt, Bruce Nauman, Robert Ryman, Edward Ruscha, Richard Serra, Robert Smithson, Jeff Wall, Lawrence Weiner among others. Jacqueline Crist, who had one of the Lippard catalogues in hand, dreamed up the idea and Lewis ran with it. He made individual appointments with 23 people to come to his studio. Once there, they were each asked to sit at his great aunt’s Underwood typewriter and respond to one of his works, not of their choosing. He gave them just thirty minutes. The results are spontaneous and free, filled with wit and sincerity — not unlike Lewis’ work.
